14 March 2019

With so many Irish writers to choose from we’ve narrowed down the scope by choosing to celebrate just six of the best contemporary Irish novelists for St Patrick’s Day, not an easy task! And which books to choose as a taster? Here is our selection, but do go to the Calibre catalogue for many more books to enjoy.

John Banville

Known for his literary novels such as the Booker Prize winning The Sea 7133, as well as his crime fiction written under the pseudonym Benjamin Black (try Christine Falls 8045).

Sebastian Barry

Another award winning author with gems such as The Secret Scripture 8256 and On Canaan’s Side 8985 to his name; both guaranteed to make you weep…

Emma Donoghue

Famously wrote the blockbuster book Room 9356, also made into a film; the story is told by a small child who is held captive in a single room with his mother. Or try something very different - The Sealed Letter 9384, a court room drama revolving around a divorce case in Victorian England.

Anne Enright

Winner of the Booker Prize with The Gathering 8044. A dysfunctional family gather for the wake of one of their siblings who was driven to drink by what happened in their grandmother’s house many years before.

Tana French

For a cracking psychological thriller you can’t go far wrong with In the Woods 8170: detective Adam Ryan investigates the disappearance of his two best friends who disappeared twenty years ago whilst playing with Adam ‘in the woods’.

Colm Toibin

His Costa Award winning Brooklyn 8586, made into the critically acclaimed film starring Saoirse Ronan, follows a young Irish woman who emigrates to New York in the 1950s to find employment.
