Ramyana: An Ancient Indian Epic

8 November 2018

Wednesday 7th November 2018 marks the beginning of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights which celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is celebrated all over the world and lasts for five days, with buildings being decorated with lights and colourful displays of fireworks.

In recognition of this festival we are highlighting a book that has been kindly donated to Calibre’s audio library which is a re-telling of the story Ramayana. It features Rama, the crown prince of Kosala, descendent of the timeless Surya dynasty who must face unimaginable danger and rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. The epic spans three worlds of gods, humans and demons where the forces of good and evil collide locked in a battle for the ultimate supremacy.

What makes this version so exceptional is that it has been written and narrated by two young brothers, Shreyas and Ayur Pulle, who after learning about the story at school and finding the books about it either too complicated or too simple, embarked on creating their own version that would be accessible for children of their age.

Their eloquent narration and passion for their project results in a compelling story which has a fairy tale quality about it and though it is written for children there is no reason why adults wouldn’t enjoy it too.

This re-telling has been widely praised and received the accolade of one of the best audio books of 2017 from The Times newspaper and is on the in-flight entertainment for all of British Airways long-haul flights. If you are unaware of the Ramayana then this would be a great introduction to the story.
