World Sight Day: Book Groups

11 October 2018

We are just over half way into Libraries Week but today we are also acknowledging World Sight Day. This is an annual event which aims to focus attention and raise awareness on vision impairment. To encompass both the “wellbeing” theme of Libraries Week and the ethos of World Sight Day we are talking about our book group service that we provide for visually impaired people.

The health and social benefits of being part of a reading group have been widely discussed including how they help increase social interaction which in turn can combat loneliness. Most importantly it is a platform for book lovers to discuss and share what they have been reading.

Calibre Audio Library supports over 60 book groups many of whom are based in public libraries. The book group service enables groups to borrow multiple copies of the same book in audio format so that everyone can enjoy the book at the same time. Groups can choose from a list of over 700 titles in the designated book group collection including best sellers, classic novels, modern fiction and popular non-fiction covering a wide range of reading tastes. There is a yearly subscription fee for this service which is £18 (including VAT) for each book group member that needs a book to listen to. So if you have six members it will cost £108 for the year. The service includes the provision of twelve titles a year of your choice in the numbers you require, access to all of the titles in the book group collection and the ability to recommend titles to be added to the collection for your group to borrow. We can also be on hand to recommend titles to you if you need some help choosing your next read.
