Wizzy the Animal Whisperer

The Further Adventures of Wizzy the Wheelchair

31 July 2018

Calibre was recently invited to attend the launch of the children’s book Wizzy and the Seaside Adventure by author Anthony Ridgeway, who is a Calibre member himself. Wizzy is a wheelchair belonging to Dan and he helps Dan to stay independent. Together they get into all sorts of adventures and encounters making for a fun packed, roller coaster of a story. The launch was very well attended and there was a chance to not only meet Anthony but also Suzan Houching, the illustrator of the book, who had brought along her original drawings for everyone to see.

Another surprise guest was actor David Suchet and his wife Sheila who between them had narrated the audio recording of the second Wizzy book called Wizzy the Animal Whisperer. David spoke at the launch and did a reading from the book and we were able to speak to him after to tell him about Calibre and that we would be adding Wizzy and the Animal Whisperer to the library when it becomes available.

Below is a video of the book launch, with a reading by David and Sheila Suchet, from BBC South Today:

Anthony has cerebral palsy and has been able to write the three books featuring Dan and Wizzy thanks to a special computer programme which speaks out each letter that he types. That way he can gradually build up the sentences to create the story. Anthony’s first book Wizzy’s Worm (617317) is available to borrow from Calibre’s library and David and Sheila Suchet’s recording of Wizzy the Animal Whisperer will also be available soon.
